24th Economic Forum (2014) Krynica-Zdrój, Poland 2-4th September 2014
The Post-Crisis World: Time for New Leaders
Social, political and economic consequences of the global crisis undermined the effectiveness of generally accepted economic theories and financial institutions. Europe is facing the need for profound revision of its approach to social policy, relations with emerging economic powers, competitiveness and building economy based on knowledge. Political leaders and stakeholders in such areas as business, science and culture have to confront the same issues. Only cooperation between them may create solutions on which the future of the Old Continent depends.
The beginning of the twenty-first century is a period of economic and social changes of unprecedented scale, dynamics and complexity. It is expected that, thanks to the internet and wireless technologies the future changes shall be made faster. The cycles will be shorter and the environment will be more diverse. The exponential growth of the available multiplicity and quality of products, services and information signify disappearance of geographical, economic and technological barriers. Economic growth is less and less driven by investments in fixed assets, and more and more by investing in intellectual, organizational sources and reputation, which are more difficult to measure but also more difficult to manage.
In a situation where conditions change enough to lead to changes in operating rules, beliefs and patterns – existing potentials, capabilities and competitive advantages diminish in importance. This requires the development of new rules and standards, new attitudes and ways of doing things, creating new leaders open to innovation and rapidly changing economic environment that create tracks for post-crisis global business.
