South-East European Exhibition on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

EXHIBITION

Date: 5-7 March 2014
Frequency: Annual
Sequence: 10th edition
Organizer: Via Expo
Venue: Sofia, Inter Expo Center

In the context of the dynamic climate changes and continuously rising prices of conventional energy sources, now more than ever a necessity of urgent upgrade of the global energy systems with aim to make ready it for meeting the numerous future challenges comes to the fore. A Report of the International Energy Agency emphasizes that the renewables as the fastest-growing power generation sector will make up almost a quarter of the global power mix by 2018 and they will become more competitive than the nuclear and coal power energy.  The forecast for growth of 40 % over the next five years sounds very optimistic.

The improving of the energy efficiency and green energy are key priorities in the policies of the countries of South-East Europe, which will ensure energy independence, reducing the negative impact on the human health and environment.

The Region features a great hydropower potential of which only 40% is used. According to experts if it is utilized, the countries can meet 100% of their energy needs with hydropower. South-East Europe has also a good geothermal energy prospects and excellent solar radiation. Well-developed agriculture and forestry industries, availability of organic waste are a prerequisite for the promotion of bioenergy.

Significant energy saving can be achieved by investing in renovations of the buildings and implementation of ‘Nearly Zero-Energy Building’ conception.
For the 10th consecutive year Sofia will host the Exhibition on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy with a geographical focus South-East Europe. It corresponds to the  world trends and presents latest energy efficient solutions, systems for energy storage, technologies for the production of bio-, hydro, solar, geothermal and wind energy, energy from waste and electric vehicle innovation.

Philip Lowe, Director-General for Energy, DG Energy EC, estimated the 2013 event as a key energy hub that can help Europe’s Energy policy to become more tangible and even more appealing. According to him the Exhibition is an ideal opportunity to show the importance of EE & RE industry in the European energy system.

2nd Annual Balkans Oil & Gas 2013 Summit – Athens 24-25th September

Oil & Gas licensing rounds and pipeline projects in the Balkan

At the end of May, leaders from Albania, Boznia-Herzegovina, Montenegro and Croatia signed an agreement about the construction of two new pipelines, the Trans-Adriatic (TAP) and the Ionian-Adriatic (IAP). Being a point of discussion for many years, the two pipeline projects will carry natural gas from the Caspian basin, starting from Greece via Albania and the Adriatic Sea to Italy and Western Europe. The significance of the two projects is high as the TAP pipeline alone is anticipated to offer capacity for gas export volumes from Azerbaijan to Europe for a period of 25 years. At the end of May, leaders from Albania, Boznia-Herzegovina, Montenegro and Croatia signed an agreement about the construction of two new pipelines, the Trans-Adriatic (TAP) and the Ionian-Adriatic (IAP). RHC-The European Technology Platform on Renewable Heating and Cooling

logo-rhcEvery year, almost 50% of the total energy consumed in Europe is used for the generation of heat for either domestic or industrial purposes. The vast majority of this energy is produced through the combustion of fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal – with an impressive environmental impact in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. Today the social, natural and economic costs of climate change highlight the urgency of moving towards a new and more sustainable energy scenario.

For all these reasons policy makers, investors and citizens are realizing that the time for heating and cooling from renewable energy sources has come.

The European Strategic Energy Technology (SETPlan – proposed by the European Commission in order to accelerate the deployment of low-carbon energy technologies – recognises the essential role of renewable energy sources for heating and cooling as a part of the EU’s strategy to improve the security of the energy supplies and to foster a competitive edge in the related highly innovative industries.

The European Technology Platform on Renewable Heating & Cooling (RHC-Platform) brings together stakeholders from the biomass, geothermal and solar thermal sector – including the related industries – to define a common strategy for increasing the use of renewable energy technologies for heating and cooling.

Building on the experience matured since 2005 within the European Solar Thermal Technology Platform (ESTTP), now incorporated in the RHC-Platform, four major European organisations – EURECAEBIOMEGEC and ESTIF – are leading the process towards the definition of a joint Vision and Strategic Research Agenda for the renewable heating and cooling sector.
